Junk Car Story

The other day a lady called me out to buy a couple of old junk cars from her so she could get up enough money to buy her grandson a car. I agreed on a certain amount .

When I got there she had all of her paper work and a copy of her state issued driver licese. I bought the first and towed it off. Then I went back and was about to tow the second car and I asked what was wrong with it. She said the mechanic told her the the motor was locked up.

I got to looking at the vehicle and connected my jumper cables to it. Once trying to start it I noticed that the starter was hung  up. I pulled out my hammer and hit the starter a few times, the car started right up.

The lady started to cry and said “I sold you thid car and I could have given it to my grandson.” I promply told her no worries and got my money back for that car.

I didn’t buy that car the other day, but I think I made a really good new friend.

Donate your car scams!!

Misc No Comments »

First of all I want to state that I am not an attorney or a CPA or anything like that. What follows is not legal or tax advice.

Let’s talk about the Donate you car scams.

First I want to say that not all appear as it is. When you donate your vehicle to one of these website charities you are more then likely giving your vehicle to a 3rd party company whom is paying the charity for the use of their name. Yes it is perfectly legal for them to do this. But I personally don’t think that it is right.

Example;

A few years back I knew a guy that was in the junk car buying business he was not doing very good. He partnered with a local charity. Within six months this junk car buyer was making big money. I sat down to eat with him and asked him how he was doing it. He told me to get a charity and pay them $25.00 for each car you get under their name. I was shocked at this. I didn’t know what to think.

Now I know some of you are thinking “As long as I get my tax deduction who cares.” Well lets look at the tax deduction scam that they do. What happens is they get or have your vehicle picked up and give you a donation letter. They don’t tell you that the average person only get $500.00 taken off of their taxes. Sum don’t even get that.

My suggestion to you is to go to the IRS website and read up on the charity donation laws, you might be surprised at what you find. If you are going to donate your vehicle to a charity make sure that you are giving it to the charity not a 3rd person acting on behalf of that charity.

Junk Car, Lost Titles, Misc, Wrecked Cars No Comments »

We buy some cars with lost titles. There are provisions. We have to follow the state and federal laws. S we have to ask for extra paperwork.

One thing that we do is document all transactions. From the date and time we receive your call to the time we arrive to inspect your vehicle.

Once we give you a quote we arrange a time and date that is convenient with your schedule. If you have lost your title we will ask you to fill out a form mandated by the state of Texas giving us permission to obtain a duplicate title to your vehicle.

At this point we take pictures of the vehicle and the vehicle identification numbers.  This is to document where and when we purchase a vehicle. At this point we will ask you for your state issued drivers license or id. We also take a picture of it. The state has a strict set of guidelines that we have to follow.

Once we get all of the information that we are required to obtain we write us a bill of sale. You will have to sign it and place your right thumb print on it.

Once we purchase your vehicle we send your state issued title to the state to get it marked as salvaged.

How do I release myself from being liable for my donated vehicle in Texas?
You fill out a form VTR-346 (found here) and submit it to the Texas Department of Transportation. This can also be done easily on the TxDOT website. For additional information, please refer to the Texas DOT web site: TxDOT.

I hope this information has been very helpful. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 713-592-2576

Hurricane Ike And flooded cars.

Misc No Comments »

Well all of us in the Houston area were effected by hurricane Ike. I had a long blog post on this site about the storm, but it was lost in the server crash. So I will touch on a few points concerning flooded cars from Ike.

First I would like to let everybody know that when we pick up flooded cars we will not sell parts off of them. Salt water destroys the wiring and most parts. Salt water to a car is like acid.

There are a lot of people fixing or trying to fix salt water flooded cars and reselling them. This is a no no. If you buy a vehicle at a car lot or from a dealer, later you find out that it is a salt water damaged car then please seek legal help. These cars will never ever be right.

Always run a carfax or a service similar to make sure that a used vehicle isn’t a flooded out car.

This brings up a good point, what do I do with my flooded car. Simple call us and we will pay you cash for it. We will need a title for the vehicle and a copy of your state issued drivers license or id. If you do not have a title and the vehicle is in your name or your spouse’s name, then I have a form that the state requires you to fill out.  Texas Motor Vehicle Department

We are here to help you in anyway that we are able. Even if you do not sell us your vehicle we are here to answer all of your questions. Please feel free to call us at 713-592-2576

What happens to a salvage or junk car after we buy them.

Junk Car, Misc No Comments »

The first step for us is paper work. We make copies of your title and all information concerning your vehicle. Then we log them into our salvage title book. We turn in our titles about once a month or sooner, depends on when we need to.

After this we drain all fluids out of the vehicle. The fluids are all drained in separate containers to keep cross contamination down. We go to great lengths not to spill or drop any of the vehicles fluids on the ground. Accidents do happen but not as often as you might think. We then send these fluids out to be recycled.

After the fluids are drained, we then remove the tires and wheels. The rubber is removed from the rims and stacked to be recycled into either other tires or even fuel. The wheel itself is usually steel or aluminum, we stack the wheels in separate stacks to send them off to get processed and recycled.

Once the tires are take car of, we remove the engine and transmission. After we evaluate the engine and transmission to see if it can be used as a core, rebuildable, we place it in the proper stack. If the engine and transmission isn’t rebuildable then we simply recycle them for the metals that they contain.

At this point we are ready to remove the break parts and any front end parts that my be rebuilt and most of the electrical parts.

The salvage car is now ready to be crushed. We load the vehicle into a huge press that smashes it flat. Once we smash it flat we stack it and wait for the processor to pick it up.

This is how we crush junk cars.

The left over car bodies are picked up by the processor and processed again by them. What basically happens is the car body is ground up into half dollar sized pieces. the grinder then separates the aluminum, brass and interior parts that is left over.

At this stage the half dollar pieces are ready to be melted down into new metal. Most of the time your old car becomes a brand new car. By us recycling you vehicle we save valuable resources that otherwise would have gone to waste.

Car being sreaded into pieces

About 98% of the vehicle is recycled. This is a huge improvement over the years past. In the past your old vehicle could have sat in a dump or in your backyard. By recycling your vehicle you are doing a great good for the environment.

IMPORTANT: Always sell your junk vehicle to a licensed salvage deeler!!

Free Towing, Junk Car, Lost Titles, Misc, Wrecked Cars No Comments »

Always sale you junk vehicle to a licensed salvage dealer!! Only a licensed salvage automobile dealer can turn the title into the state and has the proper paperwork to report that the vehicle is no longer  in your possession anymore.

When a licensed salvage auto buyer purchases you junk vehicle they will then fill out a register and turn your title into the state of Texas. The state of Texas the marks your title as sold for salvage. /this protects you against any liabilities that may come up from your vehicle.

A Texas Licensed Salvage dealer has to remove all registration, stickers and plates, then distroy them. This is for your protection.

Let me give you a scenario. You call up a company out of your local paper or off of a sign, this bandit junk buyer comes out and buys your junk car. The bandit junk buyer then repairs a few things on your vehicle and sales it to the guy down the street, then that guy sales it to another guy, never transferring the title.

Well you have a car running around in your name that you are responsible for. Let’s say the last guy that bought the car is a bad character and goes out drinking and driving. He hits a family in your old vehicle and hurts someone or even flees the scene. Well that vehicle is in your name you are held liable for it.

By using a State licensed Auto Dealer you protect yourself against this. If you are in doubt ask the buyer to show you his license. If he doesn’t have, which you have to carry it on you, you can call Texas Department of Transportation, (TXDOT) to verify that they are valid.

Even if you do not sell us your vehicle please make sure you sell it to a Texas Licensed Salvage Dealer. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call us at 713-592-2576
