How to Winterize your Vehicle

Car Maintenace, Misc No Comments »

When you think of freezing weather in our area the first thing we think about is getting our pets in and warping our water pipes. Very few people think about their vehicle. Yes your vehicle needs to be prepared for cold or freezing weather also!! I will go through the steps that every vehicle owner needs to go through to make sure their vehicle will make it.

First and most important is your radiator. Your vehicle’s radiator it the cooling system for your vehicles motor. The liquid you put in your radiator protects your radiator from freezing. This liquid is called antifreeze. Antifreeze prevents your radiator from freezing in cold weather. Antifreeze does go bad over time. You can purchase a tester at your local auto parts store. This tester will tell you if you antifreeze is still good. If it isn’t you can drain out your antifreeze by the drain plug on your radiator. Then just add new antifreeze.

Make sure that you don’t spill antifreeze on the ground, this can kill dogs, cats and even kids if they get into it. Dogs and cats drink the antifreeze because it taste and smells sweet to them. Kids also think it taste sweet so be VERY CAREFUL IF YOU SPILL ANTIFREEZE. You can take your used antifreeze to your local auto parts store and they will recycle it for free, especially if you purchase your antifreeze from them.

Let’s look at your motor oil for a second. Your motor oil is the life blood of your motor. If you are behind on your oil change now would be a great time to get it changed, in fact have them check your radiator fluid also!! When it is cold your oil thickens if your oil is old and is breaking down then you can destroy your motor, especially in this cold weather.

Here is the best way to explain it. Pancake syrup gets real think the colder it gets, if you heat it up it thins out. Same exact thing for your motor oil. This brings up a good point, When it is cold allow your motor to warn up for about ten minutes before you drive your vehicle. This will allow your engine to warm up to operating temperature along with your antifreeze and oil.

Let’s talk about that frozen windshield for a second. A great rule of thumb is to start your vehicle turn your defrost on and let the defrost do its job. Once your defrost has melted the ice on your windshield you know that your motor has warmed up. But make sure you give your vehicle at lest ten minutes to warn up. This is a must for your vehicle!!

I know this was a lengthy post but I hope that you found it very helpful. Please comment if you found this helpful. Also remember we will purchase your wrecked or junk vehicle from you. Call us at 713-592-2576

Cash for Clunkers Program

Junk Car, Misc No Comments »

I want to look at this program for a minute. I do not agree with this slick way of getting people in more debt. Let’s look at the criteria for the program.

Your vehicle must be less then twenty-five (25) years old.

Car must get less then 18 MPG

Must be drivable

Must have been registered for the past 12 months

Must have been insured for the last 12 months with no lapse in coverage

You only get the grant if you are buying or leasing a new car

These criteria are pretty basic but let us look at the last one. You have to either lease or buy a new car. This worries me. I feel like the Government is just trying to help the car makers.

If this was ment to help the public you would be able to buy up to three year old vehicles. The only people that are going to profit from this grant is people that were going to buy a new vehicle anyway.

Another thing that bothers me, what cars are the dealers going to be pushing on people? One thing that a lot of people fail to look at is the resale value of the vehicle they are buying. Please if you are looking into purchasing a vehicle under this program look into the resell value of the vehicle you are thinking about purchasing.

Now don’t get me wrong this will help some but I fear that it might hurt just as many.

Now for the record, I have received a contract to dispose of some of the vehicles that are being sponsored in this grant program. But as usual I give my personal opinion.

Can Your Truck Take the Heat This Summer?

Car Maintenace, Misc No Comments »

(ARA) – As the weather heats up, trucks and their owners take advantage of the sun and head outdoors to work and play.

A little elbow grease, motivation and some innovation can make all the difference between making your truck look new again and driving an old beater.

Whether your truck has been plowing through muck and mud, hauling tools, helping a friend move or transporting hay, there’s no doubt it could use a serious visual overhaul.

A few simple steps now can keep your truck sparkling and working hard for years to come.

Inside

Remove the floor mats and shake out the dirt, rocks and debris. Use a heavy duty vacuum cleaner to tidy up the mats and the inside of the truck.

Wipe down the instrument panel and console with a gentle, all-purpose cleanser and get at stubborn dirt in nooks and crannies with a cotton swab. An occasional spray with a dashboard protectant product helps prevent fading, warping and cracking.

Outside

Use a hose with a sprayer attachment to wet the top to bottom. Make sure the water pressure is not too hard to damage the vehicle. Wash the truck with gentle soap and tepid water to get rid of muck.

Make your final focus the and bumper. Don’t forget to hose off and clean the undercarriage and wheels wells as those areas take the brunt of the road’s abuse.

Rinse the truck and dry with a chamois or natural fiber cloth. Never let the truck air dry as water spots will develop and can be difficult to buff out.

Clean the windows and mirrors, both inside and out, taking care to eliminate streaks that can impair vision while driving.

Check the tires. Your truck takes you through rough terrain so check for any slow leaks or punctures and inflate the to proper pressure levels.

Junk Car Story

The other day a lady called me out to buy a couple of old junk cars from her so she could get up enough money to buy her grandson a car. I agreed on a certain amount .

When I got there she had all of her paper work and a copy of her state issued driver licese. I bought the first and towed it off. Then I went back and was about to tow the second car and I asked what was wrong with it. She said the mechanic told her the the motor was locked up.

I got to looking at the vehicle and connected my jumper cables to it. Once trying to start it I noticed that the starter was hung  up. I pulled out my hammer and hit the starter a few times, the car started right up.

The lady started to cry and said “I sold you thid car and I could have given it to my grandson.” I promply told her no worries and got my money back for that car.

I didn’t buy that car the other day, but I think I made a really good new friend.

We treat people like people.

Donate your car scams!!

Misc No Comments »

First of all I want to state that I am not an attorney or a CPA or anything like that. What follows is not legal or tax advice.

Let’s talk about the Donate you car scams.

First I want to say that not all appear as it is. When you donate your vehicle to one of these website charities you are more then likely giving your vehicle to a 3rd party company whom is paying the charity for the use of their name. Yes it is perfectly legal for them to do this. But I personally don’t think that it is right.

Example;

A few years back I knew a guy that was in the junk car buying business he was not doing very good. He partnered with a local charity. Within six months this junk car buyer was making big money. I sat down to eat with him and asked him how he was doing it. He told me to get a charity and pay them $25.00 for each car you get under their name. I was shocked at this. I didn’t know what to think.

Now I know some of you are thinking “As long as I get my tax deduction who cares.” Well lets look at the tax deduction scam that they do. What happens is they get or have your vehicle picked up and give you a donation letter. They don’t tell you that the average person only get $500.00 taken off of their taxes. Sum don’t even get that.

My suggestion to you is to go to the IRS website and read up on the charity donation laws, you might be surprised at what you find. If you are going to donate your vehicle to a charity make sure that you are giving it to the charity not a 3rd person acting on behalf of that charity.

As time goes by, our age grow old as the cars goes broke. And how would get rid of your non working vehicles?

You can put ads in your local papers and online. This is great if you have the time to wait and answer your phone. Also you take a chance of strange people that you don’t know coming to your house. This could be a danger to you and your family.

You can drive it around with a for sale sign on it. This puts you in the same category as above.

Park it on a street corner with a for sale sign on it. Well this will get your phone ringing and will generate interest, but you take a big chance on receiving a ticket for not having a dealers license, your car getting vandalized or even stolen.

We will be more then happy to buy your vehicle. We pay top dollar for all vehicle. Please call us for a free quote and free towing, as always. 713-592-2576

What happens when I call you?

Junk Car, Lost Titles, Misc, Wrecked Cars No Comments »

We buy some cars with lost titles. There are provisions. We have to follow the state and federal laws. S we have to ask for extra paperwork.

One thing that we do is document all transactions. From the date and time we receive your call to the time we arrive to inspect your vehicle.

Once we give you a quote we arrange a time and date that is convenient with your schedule. If you have lost your title we will ask you to fill out a form mandated by the state of Texas giving us permission to obtain a duplicate title to your vehicle.

At this point we take pictures of the vehicle and the vehicle identification numbers.  This is to document where and when we purchase a vehicle. At this point we will ask you for your state issued drivers license or id. We also take a picture of it. The state has a strict set of guidelines that we have to follow.

Once we get all of the information that we are required to obtain we write us a bill of sale. You will have to sign it and place your right thumb print on it.

Once we purchase your vehicle we send your state issued title to the state to get it marked as salvaged.

How do I release myself from being liable for my donated vehicle in Texas?
You fill out a form VTR-346 (found here) and submit it to the Texas Department of Transportation. This can also be done easily on the TxDOT website. For additional information, please refer to the Texas DOT web site: TxDOT.

I hope this information has been very helpful. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 713-592-2576
